Design Guides

We have collected documents from online sources that should be helpful in developing Bike/Ped Plans for your Community. They can be found here

Bicycle Parking and Racks

Opportunity: If you are trying to encourage your employer, a local business, or government entity to install bike racks. Here is a very useful link for your use or to help the other party plan bike racks - Comprehensive Bike Parking Guide

How Bike Walk CT Can Help: Contact our Advocacy Committee if you need more info about bike parking or would like help convincing someone that bike parking is necessary and beneficial. Sandy Fry at CRCOG might also be able to help out.

Safe Routes to School

Opportunity: There is significant federal funding allocated to funding Safe Routes to School programs in the State of Connecticut. Make sure your cities and towns know about this funding and let them know that you feel that Safe Routes are important to you! Make sure this funding isn't wasted on more pavement for cars!

How Bike Walk CT Can Help: We can point you in the direction of more information about Safe Routes programs - Safe Routes to School. Bike Walk CT can also notify members about critical Town Council meetings so that the support for these programs is visible. CT Department of Transportation now has a full time Safe Routes coordinator - see the contact info below.

Bike Walk CT needs your Help too: Bike Walk CT needs a Safe Routes to School Champion, in addition to folks individually advocating to their cities and towns. If you feel strongly about Safe Routes and your child's health - contact the Advocacy Committee.

Required reading for bicycle and multi-use path advocates

Craig Della Penna's reading list PDF

 Rails-Trails and Safe Communities

  • A thorough study and collection of crime data with regard to multi-use paths.
  • "The research that has been conducted, along with anecdotal evidence, suggests that converting an abandoned rail corridor to a trail actually tends to reduce crime by cleaning up the landscape and attracting people who use the trail for recreation and transportation."
